Bucknell junior Gillian Nordquist was voted the Patriot League Women's Cross Country Scholar-Athlete of the Year, it was announced on Wednesday by Patriot League Executive Directory Carolyn Schlie Femovich. Nordquist is the fourth Bucknell cross country runner in Patriot League history to win the prestigious award.
Nordquist, a double major in English creative writing and Spanish with a 3.91 cumulative grade-point average, was a member of the 2006 Patriot League Academic Honor Roll.
At the 2007 Patriot League Cross Country Championship, Nordquist placed ninth in the 6k women's race, finishing with a time of 21:50.00. Nordquist has been named Second-Team All-Patriot League twice (2006, 2007), and also competed at the 2006 Mid-Atlantic Regional Championships. She has been one of the most consistent runners for the Bison this year, finishing 25th of 147 at the Western Ontario International Invitational and 14th of 122 at the Lafayette Invitational.
Nordquist joins three former Bison as Patriot League Women's Cross Country Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Kelly Marsh won the award in 1990, Julie Sweitzer won the award three times from 1996-98 and Becki Marshall took home the award from 1999-2001.
To be eligible for the Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year award, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average and be a starter or key player in his/her sport. Freshmen are not eligible for this honor.
The Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year for each individual sport comprises the pool of nominees for the Patriot League Male and Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards given out over the summer. One male and one female are selected for this honor.
