Army's Newell Named Patriot League Men's Soccer Scholar-Athlete of the Year

Nov. 21, 2007

Center Valley, Pa. - Army senior Daniel Newell was named the Patriot League Men's Soccer Scholar-Athlete of the Year, it was announced on Wednesday by Patriot League Executive Director Carolyn Schlie Femovich. Newell becomes the fourth Army men's soccer student-athlete in Patriot League history to win the prestigious award, and the second in the past two years.

Newell, an Engineering Management major with a 3.77 cumulative grade-point average, was a member of the 2006 National Soccer Coaches Association of America East Region All-Academic Team, and was also named to the 2007 ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District I First-Team. The senior from Scottsdale, Ariz. was also named to the ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-America First Team earlier this week. Newell has also been appointed Deputy Brigade Commander during his time at the U.S. Military Academy, which serves as the second-highest cadet rank in the Brigade Chain of Command at West Point.

Newell is a three-time Second-Team All-Patriot League selection, and was also named the Co-Rookie of the Year following the 2004 season. The defenseman has played and started in all 17 games this season, and has scored one goal. He is also the leader of an Army defense that held the opposition to a 0.96 goals against average this season including six shutouts.

To be eligible for the Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year award, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average and be a starter or key player in his/her sport. Freshmen are not eligible for this honor.

The Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year for each individual sport comprises the pool of nominees for the Patriot League Male and Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards given out over the summer. One male and one female are selected for this honor.
