EASTON, Pa. -
The 2008 Lafayette field hockey team started preseason camp last week at Metzgar Fields. The Leopards return eight starters and 13 letterwinners from last season's Patriot League championships runner-up squad.
More than a week remains in the preseason for Lafayette that had its first scrimmage yesterday, allowing the eight freshmen continue to adjust to the speed of the collegiate game. Several returning team members have set an example for the remainder of the team to follow as practice continues.
"Jaclyn DiSanti, Meghan Cicchi and Lauren Jones all came in fit and ready to go for the defense," said head coach Andrew Griffiths. "On the forward line, Caitlin Titus, Kelly Hilovsky and Lindsay Majno are all doing well."
Another returnee from the 2008 season has also stepped up her play during practice is sophomore Kelsey Andersen, who looks to resume her starting position in the cage.
"Kelsey is playing great," Griffiths said. "She has been training really hard and she looks really sharp."
Overall, Griffiths had hoped the team would have returned a bit ahead of where it is in training, but knows there is plenty of time left in the preseason for the progress to continue.
"We are not in the position I had hoped we would be at this point," Griffiths said. "A few players have improved since last spring, but overall we are a little bit behind which is disappointing."
Lafayette field hockey continues preseason camp through the remainder of the summer before classes resume on Aug. 25. The Leopards open the season at home on Aug. 31 at noon against La Salle.
