Center Valley, Pa. - Colgate's Meredith Remmer was named the 2008 Patriot League Rowing Scholar-Athlete of the Year, it was announced on Wednesday by Patriot League Executive Director Carolyn Schlie Femovich. The scholar-athlete of the year award is voted on by the Patriot League's rowing sports information directors.
Remmer holds a 3.85 cumulative grade-point average as a biology major, while minoring in sociology and anthropology. She had previously been named to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll twice (2006 and 2007) and has been a member of the Colgate Dean's List every semester. She was also honored as a Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association Scholar-Athlete in 2007. The Oakdale, N.Y., native is a member of three national honor societies Beta Beta Beta (Biological), Gamma Sigma Alpha (Greek) and Phil Eta Sigma (Freshman).
Athletically, Remmer was named to the 2008 All-Patriot League Team for the first time in her career after Colgate placed third at the 2008 Patriot League Rowing Championship. The junior rower was the number eight seat/stroke of the Raiders' Varsity Eight team that came in first in the Petite Final at the Knecht Cup and the Murphy Cup, second in a regatta with UMass and Holy Cross, and first versus Eastern Michigan and second against UConn at the Harvey Cup.
Remmer gave Colgate its second-straight Patriot League Rowing Scholar-Athlete of the Year award as Kinsey Carlson was the League's honoree a year ago. The Patriot League's first Rowing Scholar-Athlete of the Year honor was given out in 2005 coinciding with the running of the League's inaugural rowing championship.
To be eligible for the Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year award, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average and be a starter or key player in his/her sport. Freshmen are not eligible for this honor.
The Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year for each individual sport comprises the pool of nominees for the Patriot League Male and Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards given out over the summer. One male and one female are selected for this honor.
