ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Senior midfielder Julie Reynolds (Sherman, Conn.), a two-time Second-Team All-Patriot League selection, has been elected by her peers to serve as captain of the 2008 Navy women's soccer team.
"I am really excited for this upcoming season and I am honored to be elected captain for such an amazing and special group of women," said Reynolds, a three-year starter whose presence on the defensive end has been a key part of the Midshipmen's recent success. "We have a very talented and driven team that has made great strides over the years. With our hard work and determination I anticipate this to be a successful season."
Reynolds, an intense and tenacious five-foot-two, has been a fixture in the Navy midfield since arriving in Annapolis, earning the starting nod in all but two matches during her career (64 starts). She commands respect in the middle of the field and her competitive mentality figures to set the tone for this year's squad.
"Julie has been well-respected since her plebe year, both on and off the field," said 16th-year Navy head coach Carin Gabarra. "She is one of those players that works to exhaustion every time she is out there. She always puts her team first and will do anything it takes to win. She also excels in the classroom and in the hall within her company...she really has the entire package."
In 2007, Reynolds produced a career-best five points on a pair of goals and an assist, earning all-league kudos for the second time in as many years, while helping Navy secure its second straight Patriot League title and its third in the last five seasons. In the classroom, Reynolds enjoyed her finest semester to date during this past spring. An applied mathematics major, she posted a 3.11 grade-point average earning herself a spot on the Commandant's List for the first time in her academic career.
This fall, the Sherman, Conn. native heads a Navy's eight-member Class of `09 that will look to become the program's first group of seniors to make three NCAA Tournament appearances.
"We are excited to see her step into the leadership role, along with her Class of `09 counterparts," added Gabarra. "It is a strong class with many different personalities which should make for a very good, cohesive unit. Julie is loyal, fair and very approachable. She will do a great job."
Navy opens the 2008 campaign on Saturday, August 23, against Vermont, beginning at 1:00 p.m. Immediately following the contest, fans will have a chance to meet the team and get autographs from their favorite players during the first of two "Meet the Mids" events.
